THE SCRIPTS ARE IN!!! Cast members, director, musical directors and stage managers have all met to do the first table read of the 2018 version of the Cape Breton Summertime Revue, and everyone is more than excited to bring it to Savoy Theatre audiences later this month.
Keeping in line with its time-tested formula, Revue audiences can expect to be treated to two hours of toe-tappin’, hand clappin’ tunes, some tongue-in-cheek humour, fiddling, dancing and the company of a few questionable characters, who are all undoubtedly from the beautiful and unique island of Cape Breton.
Director Maynard Morrison says audiences are in for a treat.
“We just did two days of comedy workshops with our special guest and Revue alumna, Mary-Colin Chisholm,” says Morrison. “We laughed so much our faces were sore. We’re in for a fantastic show. And that’s before we even talk about the music.”
Musical Directors Stephen Muise and Fred Lavery say the band, which includes Brian Talbot, Allie Bennett, Darren McMullen and Rachel Davis, has worked hard to put together a set to please just about everyone.
“We wanted to revisit some of the great musical moments of summers gone by in Cape Breton, with a nod to some of our best and most-loved Cape Breton artists,” said Muise.
“We’ve been able to cover a broad range of material, too so there really is something for everyone,” added Lavery.
As for content of the show, the producers say to expect a little bit of everything from lead writer Ed MacDonald.
“The Revue has always been a vehicle for Cape Bretoners to let off a little steam about life with some good humour and fantastic music, and this year there were a lot of topics to choose from,” said Savoy Theatre Manager, Pam Leader.
The Cape Breton Summertime Revue runs this year at the newly renovated (and air conditioned) Savoy Theatre, July 31st, August 1, 2, 7, and 12. Tickets are $49.50 for adults and $44.50 for seniors. Showtime is 7pm. Box Office: 902-842-1577 or tickets.capebreton.ca.
