With a slight price hike and a call for volunteers, the Cape Breton Island Film Series returns for its 18th season of great cinema beginning on Thursday, September 8, with the Christopher Plummer/Ewan MacGregor comedic drama, Beginners.
In an email to Film Series attendees, Series creator and programmer Parker Donham explained that due to the conversion of movie theatres from film to digital projection, among other factors, the ticket price for individual movies has modestly risen to $11.
“That’s still less than the weekend price of movies in Nova Scotia, and it is first our price increase in several years,” Donham notes in the email. “We’ve held student tickets to a smaller increase: they are now $7.”
Donham credits the efforts of the staff of Sydney Empire Theatres Studio Ten for keeping the increase in the ticket price so low.
Along with Beginners, one of four comedies in the season, the series offers five dramas (including a western and a historical romance), and four documentaries, including its first ever 3D feature: Werner Herzog’s thrilling exploration of ancient French cave paintings unseen since the dawn of human history.
On Sunday, November 13, the Film Series presents its annual benefit for L’Arche Cape Breton that includes a movie screening (the critically acclaimed documentary about the maverick Brazilian Formula One driver Ayrton Senna), a sumptuous Lebanese dinner afterwards, and this year a special musical guest, Grammy award winning singer/songwriter Gordie Sampson.
The email also includes an urgent appeal for volunteers and anyone interested in helping out at the ticket desk or putting up posters, should contact Donham by email at info@cbfilms.ca.
All film series movies begin at 7 pm sharp, every Thursday, at the Empire Theatre Studio 10, 325 Prince Street, Sydney. Tickets are $11 except $7 for students. Season passes are available at $90, a $54 saving over the single-ticket price.
