The Cape Breton Farmers’ Market is marrying the concept of the holiday food drive with the market’s goal of supporting local food, by offering its customers the opportunity to donate local food currency to the recipient of their choice.
“Our mission, in part, is to promote sustainability, healthy eating, and community,” Says Morningstar Pinto, Manager of the CBFM. “So, by offering folks who may not get regular exposure to the market and to local food culture the opportunity to come and buy local products, it not only helps us further our mission, it helps create an inclusive community atmosphere.”
Each Saturday Leading up to Christmas the CBFM will be selling $5 gift certificates which purchasers will then be able to donate to one of three recipients: The Every Woman’s Centre, The Family Resource Centre and The CB Transition House Foundation.
“If this campaign is successful we would like to consider expanding the scope, by offering a monthly food drive along with educational programing to promote healthy, local eating as well as to help people create their own garden spaces,” continued Pinto.
Donors will be able to make contributions in memorandum, in honour of, or can remain anonymous. School groups, hockey teams, teachers, family living away, and other groups are encouraged to show their support.
Gift certificates will also be available for the hard to buy for locavore on your gift list.
