Captain Hook kidnapped Santa Claus, leaving it up to Peter Pan and his friends to save Christmas. That’s the premise behind “Captain Hook’ed on Christmas”, the 2009 Casino Nova Scotia Dinner Theatre being staged at the Casino on George Street in Sydney. Written and directed by multi-talented New Waterford native Richard Burke, the show runs nightly at 6:30pm (except December 6th, 7th and 14th) until December 22nd
“Years after Peter Pan rid Never-neverland of Captain Hook,” explains Burke, “the evil pirate has taken up residence in the North Pole where he holds Santa captive and is running Christmas according to his own evil plan. All around the world there are reports of Yuletide festivities and traditions going terribly awry and we call on our old friends to set things straight. Peter Pan, Tinkerbell and Wendy are much older now, yet they must, one last time, take on Hook and Smee. As these archrivals clash, Christmas hangs precariously in the balance. Can Peter and his friends overcome the evil Hook once more or will Christmas be lost – forever?”
Starring in the show are well-known local musicians Laurel Martell (Laurel Martell Band, Zodiac) as “Wendy”; L.J. MacLean (The Privateers) as “Captain Hook”; singer-songwriter Erin Martell as “Tinkerbell”; singer-songwriter Cyril MacPhee as Smee”; and Colin Burke (Painting Purple) as “Peter Pan”.
“For those who have never attended Dinner Theater,” says L.J. “Captain Hook” MacLean, “it’s basically a short three-act play format, with music breaking in to the script throughout the evening. The cast members interact with the audience over the course of the evening while serving drinks and desserts, which in itself can be a lot of laughs. Drinks can be ordered from the fully stocked bar, or from the cast members between acts.” The show is about two and half hours long, with a roast turkey dinner buffet and all the trimmings including a served dessert.
“The script looked strong before we started but the actors really bring it to life and make it more than I imagined,” says Burke, an actor, musician, writer and arranger whose credits include the Cape Breton Summertime Revue, The Bette Show, and Denny Doherty’s Dream A Little Dream. “I went to the preview on Friday night and it’s great!”
