A new festival is being launched this weekend to celebrate the beautiful Bras d’Or Lakes, Canada’s Inland Sea. Running from July 23 to August 8, the Bras d’Or Lakes Festival will provide two action-packed weeks of sailing, boating, music, and cultural events in the communities along the shores of the Bras d’Or Lakes.
“For those who know them, the Bras d’Or Lakes is one of the world’s finest sailing and boating destinations,” states Dagmar Gross, Festival Event Manager. “This festival will place a spotlight on the Lakes to raise awareness of them and encourage more people, particularly sailors and boaters, to visit.”
For this inaugural year, the festival contains three sailing events: the West Bay Regatta, St. Peter’s Regatta Week and the Bras d’Or Yacht Club Regatta Week in Baddeck. In addition, the festival includes Rita MacNeil’s Home I’ll Be Concert in Big Pond and Highland Village Day in Iona, plus a number of other events in communities around the Lakes.
“The goal is to build the Bras d’Or Lakes Festival into Canada’s premier sailing, boating and cultural festival,” adds Gross. “There are some fantastic events happening this year and after the event, the festival committee will be developing plans to enhance and expand the festival for next year and beyond.”
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation (ECBC) is providing funding assistance as part of its Major Events Strategy.
The festival kicks off with an Opening Ceremony at the West Bay Regatta at Dundee Marina on Friday, July 23. More information about the festival and its specific events is available on the website at brasdorlakesfestival.com
