It was on a chilly night in December of last year, when the red curtain parted and we were swept away by excerpts from the timeless story of a young girl and her dreams of a magical Nutcracker Prince. Now, you can be part of that magic, as the Savoy Theatre presents a second annual showing of The Nutcracker Suite: A Selection of Numbers from The Nutcracker Ballet. Hailed as a success in its original showing in 2015, the production hopes to attract both new and familiar dancers to audition for the 2016 performance.
Directors/choreographers Cynthia Vokey and Kim Roper, and director Cynthia Lahey, return to head up the production team with producer Pam Leader for this exciting local ballet presentation.
They will be casting 30-45 dancers for this production and Vokey hopes to see a wide range of dancers. “We were very impressed by last year’s turn-out, so we’re anticipating that same level of enthusiasm this year,” she says. “We had such a great time. Local dancers, come out and show us your skills!”
“We’re also giving a special shout-out to any dancers whose shoes may have gathered a little dust in recent years,” adds Lahey. “We hope you’re inspired to break them out and join in our adult audition sessions, ages 21 plus, as we need a wide range of dancers, with varying skill levels, for this show.” Dancers who may have taken lessons in ballroom or couples dancing are encouraged to try out as well.
While encouraging dancers of all ages and genders to audition, this production requires dancers with a minimum of 3 years ballet experience, male and female, aged 8 and over with pointe training being an asset. Auditions will be held at the Savoy Theatre on the Main Stage, Tuesday, June 7, from 3-9pm and Thursday, June 9, from 3-9pm. The group audition sessions are approximately 45 minutes and must be booked in advance by emailing savoyauditions@gmail.com.
Female dancers must wear a dark leotard or bodysuit, pink tights, ballet shoes. This will primarily be a soft shoe audition however if you have pointe shoes we ask that you bring them as there will be some pointe work. Hair must be off the face in a tight ballet bun. Male dancers must wear black dance pants, a black or white t-shirt or tank top and either ballet shoes or jazz shoes. Dancers should arrive 20 to 30 minutes before scheduled audition time to warm up and check in.
Final dates for the performance have not been confirmed, but holds are placed for December 3-5, 2016. Dancers would have to be available for those December dates and the rehearsal schedule, which would begin in August.
