Every generation, Canada produces a handful of bright stars. They appear in the sky as educators, innovators, agitators, and inspirers. They include teachers, caregivers, athletes, scientists, chefs, entrepreneurs, and artists. Lucia Frangione is among the most luminous.
An award-winning playwright and actress based in Vancouver, Frangione has established herself in Canada’s independent theatre scene as a voice celebrated as much for its frank exploration of sexuality as its candid interrogation of spirituality. With incendiary wit and profound courage, Frangione tackles the complexities of sexism, xenophobia, secular fundamentalism, religious fanaticism, and the whole host of emotions that arrive at the threshold of our souls when we confront our ancestries, our histories, and our very selves.
From March 10-14, Lucia Frangione will be participating in a variety of events in Sydney culminating in a reading at Doktor Luke’s Coffee House on March 14 at 6 PM. At this pay-what-you-can event, Frangione will be reading from a number of her plays, including Espresso, Diamond Willow, and her new hit, In a Blue Moon. Frangione’s experience as an actress combined with her dexterity as a writer will make this an unforgettable evening of entertainment.
Frangione will also be adjudicating the Elizabeth Boardmore One-Act Play Festival at CBU’s Boardmore Playhouse. As part of the festival, CBU’s Off The Page series, in partnership with the Bandshell Players, is presenting a free workshop open to any interested writers on Saturday, March 12, from 11am-3pm. Led by Frangione, this fun and intense workshop is jam packed with theory, exercises and practical production tips. Participants will look at character building, plot structure, dialogue and how to capitalize on what theatre does best. For more information about this free workshop, contact Dr. Dana Mount (dana_mount@cbu.ca).
Don’t miss your chance to see Lucia at Doktor Luke’s – a respectable coffee house at 6 PM on Monday, March 14. For more information, check out Doktor Luke’s on Facebook or call the café at 902-270-5800.
