Miners and community leaders will share the stage, at least in print form, when Authors with Glasses Book Pub returns to JT’s in New Waterford on Wednesday, May 25, 7 to 9pm.
The featured presenters for the evening are Ian McNeil and Steve Sutherland, respectively a former host of CBC-Radio’s Information Morning and the present host of the same program.
The evening features a very special musical guest, Nipper MacLeod, of the Men of the Deeps, along with the Open Stage, when emerging poets, playwrights, and prose-makers have an opportunity to read a short selection from their unpublished work.
The Community Focus Centre of New Waterford and Area sponsors this event with donations at the door going to support the New Waterford Community Garden.
Ian McNeil will read from his 2010 release Pit Talk: The Legacy of Cape Breton’s Coal Miners, a “grassroots tribute”, as he calls it, of stories, poems, photographs and other archival material celebrating the work and legacy of Cape Breton’s colliers.
Steve Sutherland will read from Getting it Done: Conversations With Cape Breton Leaders, his compilation of interviews with prominent Cape Bretoners who have also had an impact upon Island life, originally done for CBC-Radio’s Information Morning and published in book form by Cape Breton University Press in 2010.
In the second section of the event, New Waterford’s emerging authors are encouraged to participate in the Open Stage. Each individual who wishes is allocated 5 to 7 minutes to read. Those wishing to participate should register by 7:30 the evening of the reading.
This is the second visit of Authors With Glasses to JT’s. The first visit in March saw a capacity audience enjoy readings from authors Rennie MacKenzie and Paul MacDougall, and prompted organizers to immediately begin planning a return visit.
