Besides playing in the commons/cafeteria of Cape Breton University, Caper Radio has also had an online presence for many years. And almost from its inception, one of Caper Radio’s main ambitions has been to secure the equipment and license to broadcast live to the local area.
Along with featuring music from the best indie acts from around the world, Caper Radio has made it its business to support local acts through broadcasting their work, live on-air interviews and shows, and the occasional all ages live shows in venues around the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.
On Saturday, June 25, Caper Radio hosts an all day show at Christ Church Hall, on Sydney’s Trinity Avenue (across George Street from Wentworth Park), followed by an “after dance party” at The Upstairs (at the corner of Dolbin and Ferry Streets).
The aim of this two part fundraiser is to gather more funds to purchase an FM transmitter for the station. The event also acts as the release party for a CD of songs donated by all the artists to also raise money for the station.
Both these events will feature all the artists who have played for Caper Radio over the last year.
The Christ Church event runs from 2 pm to 10 pm and features (scheduled from 2 to 6 pm) in order: Ryan Covey, Rob Harris, Alicia Penney, Seek Out Ships, Cernunnous, Generic Shit, Andrew Gillis, Wilds of Borneo, KRG, and The Den Scholars. Scheduled from 6 pm onwards are Colette Deveaux, HeartWood Slacks, Joe Costello, Black Tooth Grinn, Danny MacNeil Band, Static in Action, and finishing with Ricochet. And remember, it’s a live music event so the order of acts won’t change but all schedule times are approximate.
The after show dance party at the Upstairs features Dtox, Wobblefish and Glitch.
Admission for the Christ Church event is $8 at the door and for the Upstairs after dance is $5. The compilation CD is $10. And for just $20 music fans will get admission to both shows and the CD.
Besides promoting brilliant non-mainstream acts, Caper Radio also gives CBU students a chance to learn and gain experience in broadcasting and add and contribute to their university experience.
Caper Radio is located in the Students’ Union building at CBU and broadcasts from 9 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday. Repeat broadcasts can be heard by visiting their website www.caperradio.com.
