The Good Food Bus is en route to several communities throughout the CBRM. Organizers and community host teams are gearing up for what they are hoping will be a fun and successful pilot project that is expected to launch on September 6th at the New Dawn Centre for Social Innovation.
The Good Food Bus is a retrofitted accessible bus that will transport affordable fruits and vegetables to pre-selected communities on a bi-weekly basis.
“More information regarding the selected communities will be released very soon but for now, we are trying to get the word out that this service is on its way,” said Emma Jerrott, the Good Food Bus Coordinator. The Public is encouraged to follow The Good Food Bus on Facebook to get the quickest updates regarding the schedule, the produce that will be available each market, and more.
“(CBRM) Council believes that The Good Food Bus pilot project is one of the best projects that has been presented to council in many years,” noted District 4 councillor, Steve Gillespie.
The project is lead by a committee with representatives from New Dawn, Ecology Action Centre, United Way Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Health Authority, CBRM Recreation, Transit Cape Breton, CBRM Council, The Island Food Network, and A Better Bite Community Kitchen.
Produce will be sourced through a grocery partner, Atlantic Superstore. The priority is affordability, but Nova Scotia-grown products will be selected as much as possible.
The Good Food Bus aims to ease barriers to accessing good food, by bringing an affordable fresh food market on wheels to Cape Breton communities.
