Newfoundland Indie Rockers Hey Rosetta! will be marking the halfway point in the Granville Green’s free summer concert series with a performance on Sunday, July 25.
Since their start in 2005, Hey Rosetta! established themselves high in ranks of the Canadian Indie rock scene. They are Newfoundland’s answer to the Arcade Fire, their music layered and complex with dramatic flourishes. The group work with a garage-rock foundation, building their sound up with violin and cello with front man Tim Baker’s vocals forming the pinnacle of their sound.
The current lineup consists of Baker’s vocals, guitar, and piano; Adam Hogan on lead guitar, Josh Ward on bass and backing vocals, Phil Maloney on drums, Erin Aurich on violin, and Romesh Thavanathan adding cello. Their 2006 album Plan Your Escape made Canada’s east coast stand up and take note of the 6-piece indie ensemble, while their sophomore album Into Your Lungs was their springboard to a wider audience and critical acclaim. Into Your Lungs won three ECMAs for Recording of the Year, Group Recording of the Year, and Alternative Recording of the Year; together making a very solid triple stamp of approval for an album. Hey Rosetta’s other accolades include the CMW Indie Award for Best Album and being shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize.
For 2010, Hey Rosetta! keeps going onwards and upwards. The band’s touring schedule is booked solid until November with a trip to Shanghai for the 2010 World Expo, a tour across the United States’ major cities, and an eastward trek across Canada to wrap things up.
On the Granville stage, Hey Rosetta! will be joined by Halifax singer-songwriter John McKiel. Admission is free, and showtime is at 6:45.
