ACAP Cape Breton and CBRM Wastewater Operations invite the community to join their shoreline summer beach clean up. Locations this year are Dominion Beach, Port Morien Sandbar, and Florence Beach. The group will be meeting once a month on a Wednesday evening from 6-8pm and together will be working to restore some of the CBRM’s beautiful beaches and clean up the shoreline.
Everyone enjoys the natural beauty that we have here on Cape Breton Island. Participating in a beach cleanup is a great way to give back to the community, have fun, and take action for the environment. Plastic pollution is a serious problem that is devastating to marine life, and by helping to remove garbage from the ocean and shores, you’ll be working to protect ocean ecosystems and make our island a safer place for humans and animals.
Current environmental issues can feel overwhelming but we all have the option to make positive and productive choices. Recycling, reducing and reusing are all ways individuals can cut down on plastic and waste, but reducing is the key that really needs focus now. Another way to help is by being aware that what goes down our drains ends up in the ocean. Jen Cooper, project manager at ACAP Cape Breton says that “using biodegradable products at home and being careful not to flush anything that belongs in the trash can, like dental floss and hygiene products, are great ways to be responsible and protect the ocean.”
There are many things that we can do to help our environment and oceans, and joining a beach cleanup is a great way to get involved. The first location was Dominion Beach in June. Three-hundred-fifty (350) kilograms of garbage was collected and removed with the help and support of volunteers and the Trashformers. The next beach cleanup is at the Port Morien Sandbar on Wednesday, July 24, from 6-8pm and everyone is welcome. Clean up supplies will be provided and there also will be a prize, so come out and join us for this community event.
