ACAP Cape Breton is inviting Cape Bretoners to dig in to Environment Week with a series of engaging events. This year’s events run from June 4 to 10 at the Centre for Sustainable Communities at 582 George Street, Sydney. Whether it is with a bicycle, a blossom or a book, everyone is encouraged to take part in Environment Week 2012.
Always a great match, Environment Week and Bike Week fall on the same week here in Cape Breton. To celebrate, ACAP CB hosted the Bicycle Commuters’ Breakfast on Monday morning, June 4. Homemade bread, fruit salad, tea and coffee were served to make a great stop on your active drive to work. Following the breakfast, Velo Cape Breton hosted a Learn to Ride workshop starting from ACAP Cape Breton.
Tuesday, June 5 is World Environment Day and ACAP will be celebrating with green thumb evening. The evening will kick off at 7pm with Len Vassallo, a retired community college instructor and avid organic gardener with over 30 years of gardening experience, talking about Four Season Backyard Gardening. Nurturing People & Plants, a hands-on workshop facilitated by Janice Morrison, a Horticultural Therapist with 33 years of greenhouse experience, will follow. Please register in advance and bring a (re-used) planter. Space is limited!
On Wednesday, June 6, the second chapter of the Pages for the Planet discussion takes place at 7pm. This season’s book club pick is Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. Anyone who has read this environmental classic is welcome to take part in this engaging discussion on the hot topic of nature deficit disorder.
Thursday, June 7, ACAP CB is calling all ACAP Cape Breton staff, volunteers and supporters for its Annual General Meeting at 7pm. As part of the 20th Anniversary celebrations, the AGM will also be a reunion for past and present ACAP’ers. The evening event will be packed with updates, entertainment by Heartwood Slacks, a photographic tour of its 20 years, and plenty of old friends. There will be an Anniversary group photo taken with everyone present.
Friday, June 8 is World Oceans Day. To mark this occasion, CBRM Wastewater Operations and ACAP Cape Breton will be releasing The Solution to Water Pollution educational videos. Created in partnership with Seaside Communications, these provide a behind-the-scenes tour of the CBRM wastewater treatment plants, technology and other stuff. These viewings will take place at Riverview and Memorial High Schools, the video hosts’ schools. The host contest video winners are Bhreagh Ross and Avery Varnes.
On Saturday, June 9 from 10am to noon, join the Master Gardeners for the Raised Bed Gardening 101 hands-on workshop. There will be a demonstration on how to build and fill a raised bed as well as an opportunity to start planters from seed. Please register in advance and bring a (re-used) planter. Space is limited!
All events are free and take place at ACAP Cape Breton, 582 George Street, Sydney (except the Video Premiere). For more information or to register for either gardening workshop, please contact ACAP CB at 567-1628 or acapcb@acacpb.ns.ca.
