If you’ve been wondering about some of the questionable grooming choices that some men have been making this month, take heart. It’s for a good cause. The moustaches you see these dudes growing are for Movember, a month-long awareness and fundraising effort to benefit Prostate Cancer Canada. The funds will go towards funding research for improved screening for Prostate Cancer, treatment options, and support for men surviving the disease.
Movember began in Australia as an idea in 2003, and then as an official campaign in 2004. This year, the moustache-growing charity enjoys participation in its home country, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Europe, and South Africa. Last year’s 35,156 Canadian participants managed to raise $7.8 million for prostate Cancer Canada. Donations can be made at ca.movember.com
To celebrate the end of Movember in Sydney, a party will be held at the Royal Cape Breton Yacht Club with the night’s proceeds being donated to the cause. The entertainment lineup includes The Colin Grant Band, Mira singer/songwriter Chad Tetford, and the upcoming Taylor Burton. Everyone is encouraged to dress up in their “best Movember costume,” show off whatever has been cultivated on participants’ upper lips, and compete for the titles of Miss Movember and Man of Movember 2010.
The Movember party is open to ages 19 and over, 6:00pm to 1:00am this Friday, November 26. Admission to the party is $10. The event sponsors include Refresh Body & Skincare Clinic, Pizza Delight Sydney, Flavor Creative Catering, Scott McIntyre Photography, and 98.3 Max FM.
