The Every Woman’s Centre will sponsor the 40th annual International Women’s Day Concert on Thursday March 8, 8PM at St. George’s Hall on Nepean Street in Sydney.
The event is for women 19 year of age and older to join together and celebrate their accomplishments through the years. It’s also a chance to catch up with friends and colleagues on this very special occasion.
Maura Lea Morykot, entertainment coordinator, has been busy putting together an impressive mix of female singers, musicians, poets, storytellers and dancers, who eagerly donate their talent to provide a fantastic evening of fun. It’s a great opportunity to come out and enjoy some of the finest entertainment on the island.
With this being the 40th anniversary of the Concert in Cape Breton, it is anticipated that there’ll be many familiar faces who have been part of the celebration for most if not all of those years. As always, younger women are encouraged to attend as a means of building on the tradition of marking International Women’s Day well into the future.
Doors open at 7:30 and the event runs to 11:30. Admission is $10 waged and $5 unwaged.
This year’s Status of Women Canada National theme is #MyFeminism , inspired by the role feminism continues to play in shaping Canada and countries around the world.
Feminism is simply about equality – equality for women, men and people of all gender identities. Achieving gender equality means that everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
From the early suffragettes to the activists of today, #MyFeminism celebrates the feminists who inspire others through their determination to make a difference. They are the activists, advocates, and allies who continue to lead the way towards positive change.
In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women’s rights and international peace. Following the United Nations’ lead, Canada chose March 8 as International Women’s Day.
Each year at this time, Canadians celebrate progress toward equality for women and their full participation, reflect on the challenges and barriers that remain, and consider future steps to achieving equality for all women, in all aspects of their lives.
