The Boardmore Theatre will be raising the curtain on January 22 for its production of Six Characters in Search of an Author, written by Luigi Pirandello. The dark comedy is a play within a play about a theatre group preparing for a production. The play runs from January 22-27 with shows starting at 7 pm, except the matinee show on January 27 which starts at 2 pm.
“Six Characters in Search of an Author is a dark comedy and most productions of the script focus on its darkness. We focus on its comedy and absurdity,” says director James Thompson. “It is a play that calls into question the concept of reality and the relationship between audience, performer, and character.”
As a theatre company prepares for the final rehearsal of a children’s classic, they are interrupted by six people – but not people. Rather, they claim to be original characters from an incomplete script searching for an author who will complete their dark story and allow them to live out their tragic fates. In his classic absurdist piece of meta-theatre, Luigi Pirandello explores the relationship between reality and fiction.
Thompson describes how watching the play is a truly unique experience. “With the curtains of the Boardmore pulled back as far as they can go, the audience will quite literally get a behind the scenes look at how theatre magic goes from page to stage.”
The CBU Boardmore Playhouse box office is open the week prior to and the week during the performances from 1-5 pm, Monday through Friday and one hour before each show. Admission is $12 for general, $8 for students and seniors, and $6 for CBU students.
