In Cape Breton, we are known for being lovers of both nature and celebration. As the world marks UN Environment Day on June 5th, here in Cape Breton we will be extending the celebrations all week long. ACAP Cape Breton is inviting people in to the Centre for Sustainable Communities and out into our beautiful island nvironment.
Kicking off Environment Week on Sunday, families and friends can explore the natural-urban environment of Downtown Sydney in a geo-cache scavenger hunt. The treasures will be revealed at the Environment Week Opening Ceremonies back at ACAP Cape Breton.
Celebrations are doubled up with Velo Cape Breton’s Bike Week and the two will meet at the breakfast table. Consider changing how you move on Monday and Friday (as well as everyday!) with the Bike Week Commuters’ Breakfast. Homemade bread, fruit salad, tea and coffee are free for all cyclists and Mayor Morgan will join Monday’s feast. If you must take your car on Wednesday, drop by Mercer Fuels on the Esplanade for the Clean Air Day Tire Pressure Clinic to save gas and GHGs.
The food we eat is an important and delicious part of our environment and you can take a bite out of Cape Breton at the Cape Breton Farmers’ Market on Tuesday at ACAP at lunchtime. If you want to learn how to grow your own food, come out to Wednesday’s free evening DIY Gardening Workshop with Master Gardeners. Beginners’ kits are available or you can bring your own seeds and Q’s.
ACAP Cape Breton will also be moving around the island with Department of Natural Resources’ Kids Forest Day on the Mira and RBC’s Blue Water Day. If you’re interested in learning more about ACAP Cape Breton’s activities and actions of the past year or want to learn more about Cape Breton’s environmental non-profit organization, come out to the Annual General Meeting, Thursday at 7PM.
All events are free and for all ages. Get out for a breath of fresh air and celebrate Cape Breton’s Environment Week.
