The Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative (CBMIC) and Governor’s Pub and Eatery in Sydney have teamed up to present the Music Island Songwriter’s Series. The Thursday night series will run throughout October, featuring three Cape Breton songwriters each week.
“Governor’s Pub and Eatery approached us with an offer to host a songwriter’s series, as a fundraising opportunity for CBMIC,” explains Duane Nardocchio, Operations Manager for CBMIC.
Like many non-profit organizations, early Covid-19 restrictions prevented CBMIC from having their annual fundraiser in May.
“This sounded like an excellent opportunity for CBMIC and Cape Breton artists,” Nardocchio says. “After discussions with CBMIC partners, we were able to get organized and secure sponsorship for the program to ensure all 18 artists in the series would be paid.”
The Music Island Songwriter’s Series starts this Thursday, October 1st, with Colette Deveaux, Rebecca Ratchford, and Rusty James.
Colette Deveaux is a singer-songwriter with roots in folk, rock, and blues with a little ‘00s indie influence. A poet with an ear for melody, plus the vocal and guitar chops to back it up, Colette is likely to have you humming something you barely know yet.
Rebecca Ratchford is an indie-folk singer-songwriter based in Cape Breton. While part of the Cape Breton indie-rock outfit “Rebecca’s Room”, Rebecca’s solo presence has a more wistful and melancholic tone; you may feel as though she is singing to your shadow.
Rusty James is a Nova Scotia singer-songwriter with a zestful love for telling stories and crafting songs. If you’re looking for warm fuzzy music filled with emotion and tons of feels, look no further. Rusty James offers that in spades. When Rusty isn’t living the simple life with his family in rural Cape Breton Island, he can be found traveling about the waters of the great white north.
Brought to you in part by Breton Brewing, 902 Advertising Group, Governors Pub, Seaside Communications, and CBMIC, the Music Island Songwriter’s Series wraps up on October 29th with a double-header, six-songwriter finale.
Shows run from 7-9pm and are free to attend. CBMIC will be accepting donations as part of their fundraising efforts, which go towards operational costs and allow the organization to continue its support of the Cape Breton music industry. Reservations are recommended. Call Governors at 902-562-7646 to book a table.
